Ballbearing

Tiny metallic spheres build up into immense rolling landscapes.

A handful of bearings is also a piece of hillside.

History

At first the rolling metallic hills made permanent construction seem impossible. Settlers learned to sort the tiny spheres into interlocking beds beneath their buildings, leaving broad unbuilt valleys where the loose material could continue its slow migration.

Economy

Sphere graders supply bearings of carefully measured size to workshops across the Silver Assembly. Maintenance crews recover escaped material with magnetic sweepers and sell service contracts, keeping production tied to reuse rather than endless new smelting.

Rainbow Road IAS

Joined in Show Year 21 · The Settled Valley. The Rolling Landscape Showcase entered the tour on a stabilized plateau after local graders built custom bearing displays beneath each parked car.

A fictional calendar kept by the Rainbow Road IAS. Year 1 begins with the first passage through the sandcastle on the beach in 1999; years count completed journeys inside its pocket of eternity, not elapsed Earth years. Local seasons identify each world’s first gathering. These histories belong to Leonida Larry’s imagined multiverse.

Iridella’s arrival · Ballbearing

A moment on the road

“Mind the little bearings beside the path. Here, a pocketful of machinery is also a piece of landscape.”

In this galaxy · The things we make together

Garlicia’s mechanics repair a damaged panel while grumbling through every compliment. Iridella learns the sound of a workshop that cares too much to let a poor repair leave.

Garlicia catches the gathering in a hundred curved reflections. At first every polished panel seems to insist on being the center. Then the makers begin comparing their work: a join, an improvised bracket, a surface patiently brought back to life.

Chromey turns a mirror toward the whole court. The image is untidy and full of people, exactly as a gathering should be. Iridella keeps that view. The road is becoming something they make together, one useful contribution at a time.
